Is this where you use Pearle Cotton to quilt?? And the stitches are large...and makes it look primitive?? I would think that you just do a large running stitch.

Could this be a method where you put the thick thread on the babbin and reg. thread on top and you quilt the blocks up-side-down? You have to adjust the bobbin tension for the thicker threas. I don't like to mess with bobbin tension so I have never tried it.

Big stich quilting is just quilting with big stiches. aprox 1/2 inch long. it looks like toe nail catchers to me.
edited to add the link.
This technique was was demonstrated on HGTV's Simply Quilts' episode 121 by Billie Lauder. She called it Big Stitch quilting. She used pearl cottom size 8 and a between needle size 5 or 6. She said to make stitches bigger on the top than the bottom. To start, knot the thread, insert the needle 1 inch from the starting point. Pull the thread through until the knot is against the quilt top. Take the tip of the needle and poke it through the quilt just to the left of the knot, then poke it to the right of the knot, but leave the needle in the quilt while you snap the knot into the layers. If you want a copy of the episode, HGTV has a website where you can order the episode for about $20.

You might also try searching for 'Sashiko quilting'.

Sounds like the large stitching with Applique' work to make it look Primitive to me.

"Big Stitch Quilting" is a new term that describes quilting by hand, using a fairly large size thread - say perle cotton, or hand embroidery thread. 12 weight sulky cotton, or similar size threads are used. A longer needle is used than in traditional "rocker" style hand quilting. It somewhat mimics "Sashiko" style quilting...Stitches might be more like 1/8th of and inch long rather than the much tinier traditional hand quilting stitches. It''''s being used quite a bit in "Modern Quilting" designs.
